Who else has a hard time staying quiet when everything within you wants to take matters into your own hands? This is certainly a skill I have yet to master but it’s one I work daily to improve because I have seen first hand the satisfying result of a silent response verses that of fighting with words.
Proverbs 17 says, “a truly wise person uses few words; a person with understanding is even-tempered. Even fools are thought wise when they keep silent; with their mouths shut, they seem intelligent”.
Learning to be quiet is a skill indeed, but it is a skill that will produce great character and bring peace, and change you in the most profound ways. You see, Jesus can work best when we move out of the way and allow Him to work. Most of the time the change we want to see in others is a change that needs to be made within ourselves first.
Lord, help us to be silent in hard times when we want to take matters into our own hands. Teach us to fight our battles through silence and pray for you to do what we cannot. Give us the strength, dignity, and character to reflect you in every way. May we put on the attitude of Jesus in all that we say and do.
